Now breaking your back to quit smoking is, of course, more than just a little extreme.  But it does illustrate an important point.  One of the hands-down best ways to quit smoking is to hang your quitting on a major life event.

My wife did break her back (a horse-riding accident) two years ago–and she hasn’t smoked since.  She knew, lying on her recently repaired back in the hospital, that this was the needed impetus and the perfect opportunity to really try to quit smoking.  And it worked for her.

Any drastic change in our lives usually comes right on the heels of a major life event.  The loss of a job or a spouse, the death of a loved one, the birth of a child, a marriage–these are the kinds of things that jolt us into finally changing a long-entrenched behavior.  And the same holds true for quitting smoking.  But it has to be a big event in our lives, something that enormously alters the status quo, for it to work.

Consider New Year’s resolutions.  Why do we almost never keep them?  Well, because the arrival of a new year just isn’t a big enough event to lead to any kind of dramatic or lasting change.  We have good intentions for a couple of weeks, but the impetus wanes and the desire dwindles.  After all, most of us see the arrival of 60 to 80 new years in our lives, a familiarity which lessens the impact.  If, then, you’re going to approach your quitting smoking in this way, make sure the peg you hang it on is a big and sturdy peg.

The reason this method works is that when something genuinely life-altering happens to us, we generally change our thinking.  We begin to perceive people and events in a new light, our priorities change, and our behaviors often jump out of their accustomed deep ruts–all because our thoughts are different, which leads to different beliefs, which results in changed behaviors.

When my wife severely injured her back, her priorities instantly changed.  Immediate survival became paramount.  And she was worried about ever again holding and playing with her grandchildren.  Sucking on a cigarette just didn’t seem to be very important.  (And keep in mind that she had been a 3-pack-a-day smoker for almost 30 years).  Her thinking changed.  But, in the long run, it wasn’t quite enough.

When her mind began to return to its old familiar grooves, thus allowing the cravings for a cigarette to become almost overwhelming, she turned to patches and pills.  Besides being very expensive, they worked only to a limited degree.  These chemical aids just masked the problem only slightly–the old thought patterns and the desire were still there.  But, because of the recent major life event, she was able to tough it out and make it work.  Still, it all could have been much easier.

If my wife had had access to the some of the proven stop-smoking techniques other people have successfully used, her battle would have been so much easier.  At the time, though, we weren’t aware of these programs.  A major life event is key, but, as we found out, successful quitting sometimes requires just a little bit more.

        Would you be in favor of health insurance plans that cost less but force you to make lifestyle changes?



        I saw somewhere that an estimated 90% of diabetes, 70% of heart disease, and 60% of cancer cases are directly related to either obesity, sedentary lifestyle, tobacco use, or drinking outside of moderation. For the amount of people that whine about drug prices, insurance costs, and drug bills, 1 out of 3 americans is overweight, something like 1 in 5 americans over 50 or 60 or something are diabetic or prediabetic (each case of diabetes costs an average of k per year in treatment and complications), and about 1 in 3 die of heart disease. People do not take personal responsibility for themselves, and they cost society a lot of money.

        Would you support an insurance plan that would be lower cost, but would drop your coverage if you developed a chronic disease like diabetes or something, and failed to get your weight down to a certain goal, mange you condition, etc. or maybe COPD and maybe you would have to quit smoking within 6 months, etc etc? Would you join the plan? Is it fair?
        if a large enough part of the population joined, it would probably drop peoples rates on this new plan a lot since most money in healthcare is spent on managing chronic conditions, and people on traditional plans would have their rates go up since the responsible people who generally pay in more than they use would be on the new plan
        not government, im talking private insurance. but yes i would love it if the government forced people on medicaid and other assistance programs to meet such goals

          Hard to Stop Smoking? Here’s Why

          Do you do it? Rolling up some dried leaves of the tobacco plant wrapping some thin paper around it and then putting a lighted match to one end of this little ‘stick’ and then sucking in the smoke which is produced by the burning leaves seems a strange thing to do. The smoke – and the chemicals in the smoke – are then inhaled into the lungs and taken into the bloodstream. (By the way, it’s estimated that around 4,000 chemicals are produced and inhaled in the smoke of a cigarette, many of these chemicals in other forms are deadly)

          It’s curious as to why people would do such a thing. The World Health Organization estimates there are 600 million smokers around the world. That’s a lot of smoke – and a lit of dried tobacco leaves. It’s also known – not suspected or even ‘suggested’ – KNOWN that cigarette smoking directly links to fatal diseases. The predominant ones include a range of cancers and of course cardiovascular diseases. And of course the diseases that affect your breathing, the respiratory diseases. The facts are well known and well documented and I don’t intend to go into the details here.

          But if people engage in this practice which is know to have such devastating side effects why do they do it and more importantly why do they have difficulty stopping? If you’re a smoker, I’m sure you have at least some idea that it’s hard to stop as most smokers at some stage, tried to quit. So let’s look at the main reasons why people find it difficult to stop – and stopping means no more smoking, ever, finish for good.

          - Habit

          Most of us develop habits – some are positive and helpful but others. The subconscious programs these behaviors as ‘normal’, the subconscious isn’t able to decide that it’s good or bad – it just has us repeating the behavior. At a conscious level we may know the habit doesn’t serve our well-being and yet we keep doing it. People often use the ‘habit’ word as an excuse not to change a particular behavior – but we can change. We all had habits as children which we have now let go of as adults – if those habits or behaviors were not good for us. (How many adults do you see with a baby’s pacifier in their mouth?) If you’re a smoker, you CAN let go of the smoking habit.

          - Chemical addiction

          There are over 4,000 different chemicals in the smoke of tobacco leaves and among those Nicotine is known to have addictive properties. Simply, the body develops a ‘need’ or dependence on nicotine moving through the bloodstream. The body has a dependence on many substances for survival, it has a dependence on ‘good’ substances ‘water is one, food and nutrition is another. Nicotine is not one of those the body needs neither are the other chemicals in tobacco smoke. In breaking this addiction, the body will react in a way that isn’t always comfortable – but of course you can, just like other smokers who are now non-smokers.

          - Lack of willpower

          “Oh, I’ve tried, but I just can’t seem to stop. I stop for a day and then I’ve got to have another cigarette.” Naturally you’ll need willpower and commitment to stop smoking. So this doesn’t show that the person wants to make a positive change to their health. Again, this is an excuse because willpower can be improved positively and there will be a definite improvement in well-being and long-term health outcomes.

          - No desire to stop

          Some people simply do not want to stop. They even claim it’s enjoyable and wont affect their health and and they’ll deal with any consequences – if and when they occur. “I enjoy doing this.” “I do it because I’m bored. It makes me feel good.”.” This somewhat fatalistic approach is often hard to counter. I have personal experience with a long term smoker who refused to stop smoking – and died prematurely of smoking-related cardiovascular disease.

          - Peer pressure

          Because we are ‘social’ animals, we like to associate with other humans. Often we are influenced by their behaviors and attitudes. Some people just want to do what their friends do – so, in this case, they stay smoking. It’s a’ thing’ – a behavior – they do this together. You can stop smoking - and still have your friends.

          Let’s face it, we know the dangers of smoking. In reading this you may recognize the one or even more – of the reasons I’ve set out above that you’ve identified makes it harder for you to quit. But there are ways to become a non-smoker and it’s a matter of you finding out the best approach for you to let go of smoking – for good.
